Burnout is the state of physical and emotional fatigue as a result of being regularly exposed to high levels of stress.
There are times when our responsibilities over stress us, and when we encounter the problematic tasks of fulfilling these demands, we become frustrated professionally and psychologically.
Here at Gradehacker we regularly assist college students with their exams. From our years of experience, we have seen firsthand how commonly students struggle with study burnouts. Many of our clients dread finals season because of the study burnout they assume is inevitable.
In this article we will be sharing 6 little known tips on how to avoid study burnouts. By following these tips, you will no longer have to fear finals season!
1) Sleep better
It’s fantastic what catching some Z’s can do for our brain. This may be an obvious step, but it’s essential. Many students who complain about lack of productivity or excessive stress do NOT have a sleep cycle that lasts at least 7 hours.
The consequences of sleeping less than seven hours a day include:
- Increased blood pressure
- Eating disorders
- Memory retention difficulties
No matter how many responsibilities you have, in order to avoid study burnouts, ALWAYS make sure you have a consistent and balanced sleep cycle so your brain and mind can function at its optimum level. You should also check out these awesome tips to sleep better at night!
2) Take study breaks!
The majority of students partake in endless hours of non-stop studying. If you are one of these students, do yourself a favor and take study breaks!
Ideally, you should concentrate on your study sessions in intervals of one to two hours, with a short break of 20 or 25 minutes between each interval. During these breaks, do any activity that can bring you peace and help you reduce stress levels.
You can meditate, take a walk outside, or sit quietly and not think about study or work. Also, you can try different concentration techniques, like the Pomodoro technique to maximize your productivity.

3) Be Aware of Your Stressors
Stress is everywhere! But only if we let it be. The best way to avoid study burnouts is by knowing precisely what the most stressful factors in your life are.
Are you having family problems? Do you lack the money to pay your bills? Or are you feeling sad and lacking motivation to perform your tasks?
Identify your needs and the factors that are generating more stress in your life to evaluate possible solutions. Once these have been internalized, become aware of these stress triggers as they start to creep into your study and immediately block them before they grow into more significant mind-consuming thoughts.
4) Eating Healthy Will Keep Your Mind Strong
Don’t we all remember when our parents told us to eat our veggies? Well, this is when it comes into play.
Study burnouts are commonly associated with a poor diet. Too much fast food, sodas, and snacks that do not have enough nutrients to feed your brain can have a detrimental effect on your mood and your productivity.
Focus your diet on balanced meals. The first step towards this would be to increase the intake of beneficial fruits and vegetables such as broccoli and avocado; and the incorporation of seeds like chia and sesame in your diet.

5) Avoid Social Isolation
Loneliness can be a real bummer if done in excess. Research has shown that social isolation is closely related to poor stress management and depressive feelings.
Understand that you cannot do everything by yourself! The best thing you can do in burnout situations is to seek help from friends, family, and even professionals who can advise us.
Whenever you have time to interact with your friends or share a free moment with them, do it. This will help you recognize the positive aspects of sharing time with other people and will make you feel accompanied in the most challenging moments.
6) Set and Achieve Long and Short-term Goals
With everything going on, it is reasonable to get lost on the long road that is a college degree. You study and study and sometimes begin to feel you do not have a real purpose. You can change this by setting short and long-term goals.
Long-term goals are based on an extensive plan of how you want your future to be and how you will act to achieve your goals.
On the other hand, short-term goals can help you experience a more immediate sense of satisfaction and can help you better assess your long-term goals.
